Department of Fluid Mechanics

Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

The predecessor of the Department of Fluid Dynamics was founded in 1934 as The Institute of Aerodynamics. The building of the Department was finished in 1941 together with one of the largest wind tunnels in Central Europe. This wind tunnel is operational to this date.

Since the II. world war to this date the following research areas are existing at the Department (led by József Gruber, Tibor Szentmártony, and Tamás Lajos): acoustics, flow control, turbomachinery, atmospheric flows, vehicle aerodynamics, environmental protection, ventilation.

In 1991 the Kármán Tódor Wind Tunnel Laboratory was founded. With the rapid development of informatics the numerical simulation of fluid flows and acoustics also got an important role in the Department.

The Department of Fluid Mechanics is involved in the teaching of engineering students as well as research and development projects with our industrial partners.

The National Research, Development and Innovation Office identified and summarized the TOP 50 Hungarian research infrastructures in a publication. This publication showcases 52 excellent research infrastructures and infrastructure clusters in Hungary, furthermore it introduces five up-and-coming emerging research facilities. The purpose of the publication is, by demonstrating the services and activities of our top-of-the-line research infrastructures to potential international partners, to enhance international research-cooperation.
